This thesis systematically investigates carrier synchronization for differential detection and coherent detection optical receivers after single-carrier transmission with multi-level modulation. Non-data-aided estimator performance for carrier frequency offset monitoring and for carrier phase tracking is compared to the MCRB. Algorithm architectures for high-speed processing with transmission rates above 100 Gbit/s are provided, verified by numerical and measured data. Original algorithms include a low-complexity parallel implementation of carrier recovery for digital high-speed processing, mitigation of nonlinear phase noise, and adaptive frequency-based estimators with large acquisition ranges amongst others.
