This book analyzes the ideology-based reception of Adam Mickiewicz in Communist Poland and of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in East Germany, the dynamics of that process and the strategies used to exploit the iconic status of the poets for the purpose of reaffirming the legitimacy of the new system.

Anna Artwi?ska is a postdoctoral fellow at the Department of Slavic Literature at the University of Hamburg. Her research interests comprise the study of communism, socialist realism, postcolonial studies, the romantic period in Russian, German and Polish literature and genealogical narratives in Russian and Polish contemporary literature.
