Dies ist kein Buch über Afrika, sondern über Menschen, denen der Journalist und Fotograf Roland Brockmann auf vier Reisen (2016-2017) begegnet ist - unterwegs mit Minibus, Motorradtaxi oder auch zu Fuß in Kenia und Tansania:
Das Buch handelt von Ziegelbrennern, Lehrern, Ladenbesitzern, Sargmachern, Farmern oder Fischern, allesamt ganz normalen Leuten, die in ihren Statements zu den Bildern Einblicke in ihr Leben gewähren. Ihre persönlichen Geschichten über Liebe, Kummer, Hoffnung, Trennung oder Erfolg... Dabei geht es dem Autor stets um Begegnungen auf Augenhöhe.
Als Reporter berichtet Roland Brockmann seit über zehn Jahren aus Afrika - meist im Auftrag von Hilfsorganisationen oder den Medien. Und daher vor allem über Katastrophen oder Krisen. Denn für den afrikanischen Alltag interessiert sich der westliche Blick kaum. In den Massenmedien erscheint Afrika entweder als Kontinent des Elends oder der Exotik. Das vorliegende Buch will mit diesem Blick Europas auf Afrika von oben herab brechen: Es will kein repräsentatives Bild von Afrika zeichnen. "Vielmehr begegnen wir Männern und Frauen, die in ihrem Alltag vor ähnlichen Herausforderungen stehen wie viele Menschen in anderen Weltregionen auch," so Alexis Malefakis, Ethnologe und Kurator Afrika am Völkerkundemuseum der Universität Zürich.

This is not a book about Africa, but about people the Journalist and Photographer Roland Brockmann met there on four journeys (2016-2017) through Kenya and Tanzania.
The book is about brick-burners, teachers, shopkeepers, coffin-makers, farmers or fishermen, all of whom are ordinary people who give insights into their lives in their statements on the pictures. Their personal stories of love, sorrow, hope, separation or success form the backbone of the book, while their fireplace, workshop, apartment or field provide the stage for the pictures of the book. The author is always interested in encounters at eye level.
As a reporter, Roland Brockmann has been reporting from Africa for over ten years - mostly on behalf of aid organisations or the media. And therefore above all about catastrophes or crises. After all, the Western gaze is hardly interested in everyday life in Africa. In the mass media, Africa appears either as a continent of misery or exoticism. With this view of Europe, this book wants to break down on Africa from above: It does not want to draw a representative picture of Africa. "Rather, we encounter men and women who face similar challenges in their everyday lives as many people in other regions of the world," says Alexis Malefakis, ethnologist and curator Africa at the Ethnographic Museum at the University of Zürich.

Roland Brockmann lebt als Journalist, Fotograf und Video Producer in Berlin. Geboren in Hamburg, studierte er Soziologie, bevor er 1994 als Journalist nach Berlin ging, wo er zunächst als Redakteur arbeitete, dann als freier Reporter. Seitdem hat er aus über fünfzig Ländern berichtet – u. a. für GQ, Mare, Süddeutsche Zeitung, Die Tageszeitung, Die Welt. 1999 berichtete er zum ersten Mal aus Afrika. Von 2002 bis 2004 lebte er als Entwicklungshelfer in Daressalam, von 2005 bis 2006 als freier Korrespondent in Nairobi. Seit 2011 arbeitet er als Kameramann und Fotograf für verschiedene Hilfsorganisationen. Unter anderem berichtete er über Boko-Haram-Flüchtlinge, Koltan-Minen im Kongo, Land Grabbing in Sierra Leone oder Flüchtlingscamps im Südsudan.

Roland Brockmann is a Berlin-based Journalist, Photographer and Video Producer. Born in Hamburg, he studied Sociology before moving to Berlin in 1994 as a journalist, where he first worked as an editor and later as a freelance reporter. Since then, he has been reporting from more than fifty countries on four continents – including for GQ, Mare, Süddeutsche Zeitung, Die Tageszeitung, Die Welt. In 1999 he first reported from Africa. Between 2002 and 2004 he lived as a foreign aid worker in Dar es Salaam and from 2005 to 2006 as a freelance correspondent in Nairobi. Since 2011 he has been working as a cameraman and photographer for numerous charity organizations. He has reported on Boko Haram refugees, coltan mines in Congo, Land Grabbing in Sierra Leone or refugee camps in South Sudan, among others.
