Franz Erhard Walther is unquestionably a great exception among twentieth century artists, one who has resolutely questioned what an artwork can be and fundamentally changed it. Naturally the innovatory thrust of his wide-ranging oeuvre is primarily demonstrated by his art, but it also is evinced in the relationship between the art and the beholder, who in Franz Erhard Walthers work becomes an active agent.
